Measuring 4 and 4 Liters
A milkman has an 8-liter bowl which is full of fresh milk.
He needs to divide this milk equally into exactly two portions (4 + 4 liters).
But he only has two empty bowls: a 5-liter and a 3-liter bowl.
How can he divide the 8 liters in half in as few steps as possible.

Step 1: Fill 3-liter bowl and empty it into 5-liter bowl.
ReplyDeleteStep 2: Again fill 3-liter bowl, empty it in the 5-liter bowl which is already 3 liters filled. So, 3-liter bowl now contains 1 liter of milk.
Step 3: Empty the 5-liter bowl back in 8-liter bowl. At this point you have 7 liters of milk in 8-liter bowl, 1 liter milk in 3-liter bowl and 5-liter bowl is empty.
Step 4: Move 1 liter of milk from 3-liter bowl to 5-liter bowl. 3-liter bowl is empty now.
Step 5: Fill the 3-liter bowl from the 8-lilter bowl (having 7 liters milk).
Step 6: Empty the 3-liter bowl into 5-liter bowl (already having 1 liter in it).
Now, the 5-liter bowl contains 4 liters of milk; and 8-liter bowl is also left with 4 liters of milk.
Hence 8 liters of milk is divided into two equal parts (4 + 4 liters)
Excellent!
